How to care for faux leather and avoid early peeling
Faux leather bags, shoes and jackets last longer with gentle cleaning, good storage and attention to heat and moisture.
Short answer: to care for faux leather, clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth and mild soap, dry in the shade, store in a ventilated place away from heat, sun and moisture, and avoid friction and harsh products. Even so, peeling can happen over time, especially on heavily used or lower-quality pieces. This text is general and names no products.
What faux leather is
It is a material made of a textile base covered with a layer of polymer, such as polyurethane (PU) or PVC, that imitates the look of leather. The surface layer can come away from the base with use, moisture and aging, which is what we call peeling.
Why it peels
- Aging of the material, even when the piece is stored away.
- Moisture and heat, which speed up degradation.
- Friction and repeated folds, in areas such as straps, corners and creases.
- Harsh products, such as alcohol and solvents.
- Quality of the layer and the base.
Step-by-step care
- Clean lightly and often. Use a soft, slightly damp cloth with mild soap and wipe gently. Dry with a clean cloth.
- Avoid harsh products. Alcohol, acetone, removers and abrasive sponges damage the surface.
- Do not let it get too wet. If it gets wet, dry in the shade, away from heat sources.
- Avoid direct sun and heat. Do not leave it in closed cars or near heaters.
- Store well. In an airy place, in a cloth bag or with soft paper inside to keep its shape. Avoid sealed plastic, which traps moisture.
- Do not stack weight on the pieces.
- Rotate use to give the material a rest, especially with shoes and bags.
- Avoid repeatedly folding creases.
- Watch for friction, such as belts, keys and zippers that scrape.
Do conditioners help?
Faux leather does not absorb oils the way natural leather does. Products for natural leather may have no effect and, in some cases, leave the surface sticky. Prefer the manufacturer's guidance.
What to do if it has already peeled
Small spots can be treated with specific repair products, but peeling tends to spread. For heavily affected pieces, repair may not be worth it.
Counterpoints
Faux leather costs less and uses no animal material, but it usually lasts less than natural leather. Check the quality when buying and read the label.
