For much of the internet era, an image or video felt like stronger evidence than text. It could still be misleading, but seeing something carried psychological weight.

Generative AI is weakening that shortcut. Realistic images, voices and videos can now be created, edited or recombined at a speed that makes visual plausibility less useful as proof.

This does not mean every image becomes untrustworthy. It means verification has to move beyond appearance. Who published it? Is there an original source? Does the date match the event? Are independent sources reporting the same thing?

Provenance technologies and content credentials may help, but habits also matter. Pausing before sharing and separating 'this looks real' from 'this is verified' will become a basic form of digital literacy.

The internet is not entering a world without evidence. It is entering a world where evidence will increasingly need context.
