A practical checklist for Dogs cats and other pets
A practical checklist for safer pet care at home.
A prepared home reduces accidents and stress for dogs, cats and small companion animals. This checklist combines household safety with daily care without requiring unnecessary shopping.
Water, meals and storage
Keep fresh water accessible and inspect bowls throughout the day. Store food according to package guidance to protect it from moisture and pests. Keep medicines, chocolate and other potentially toxic substances out of reach.
Windows, cables and plants
Inspect window screens, gates, escape routes and electrical cords that could be chewed. Some houseplants are toxic to animals, so identify species before placing them within reach. Balconies and open windows need suitable protection.
Rest and privacy
Provide a quiet place where the animal can withdraw from guests and noise. Cats benefit from hiding places, scratchers and safe surfaces. Animals living in enclosures require appropriate ventilation, dimensions and opportunities for natural behaviour.
Activity and social interaction
Plan walks, play and exploration at a suitable intensity. Rotate activities to maintain interest without overwhelming the pet. Respect signs of distress and teach children not to interrupt eating or sleeping animals.
Health records and hygiene
Keep veterinary contacts, vaccination records and individualized preventive-care advice available. Clean litter areas, bedding and bowls with products safe for the species. Notice changes in stool, urination, weight and activity.
Travel and emergency plan
Identify pets appropriately and keep contact details current. Have a suitable carrier, emergency veterinary contact and instructions for anyone caring for the animal. Do not improvise with medicines intended for people.
A checklist works best when it stays simple: revisit the environment and adjust daily care as your pet’s needs change.
