Seven-day challenge to enrich your cat's environment
Small changes can make a cat's day-to-day more interesting and safe.
Cats need physical and mental stimulation, even in small homes. Environmental enrichment offers chances to explore, play-hunt, hide and observe. In this challenge, you will make one small change a day for a week, always safely and respecting your cat's pace. This text is general and does not replace a veterinarian's guidance.
Goal
At the end of seven days, have identified what interests your cat and incorporated two or three permanent changes into the routine.
Materials and time
- Simple items you already have at home that are safe.
- A notebook for the log.
- 10 to 20 minutes a day.
Steps by day
- Day 1 - Observation. Without changing anything, watch where the cat stays, what it does and what it ignores.
- Day 2 - Hunting play. Use a wand toy, with movement similar to prey, for a few minutes. Put the toy away afterward so it is not swallowed.
- Day 3 - Hiding places. Provide an open cardboard box or a quiet space to hide in.
- Day 4 - Height. Offer a safe high spot, such as a sturdy shelf or a cat tree, with easy access.
- Day 5 - Window. Leave a safe spot for looking outside, with the window protected by a screen.
- Day 6 - Food as play. Hide small portions of the usual meal around the house, or use an interactive feeder.
- Day 7 - Wrap-up. See what it liked most and decide what to keep.
Log
Each day, note what you offered, how the cat reacted (interest, indifference, fear) and for how long. This helps you learn its preferences.
After the challenge: rotation and warning signs
Swap the available toys every few days to keep things novel, and keep stable scratching posts near where the cat sleeps. If the cat hides too much, stops eating, urinates outside the litter box or becomes aggressive, see a veterinarian: these signs can have a medical cause.
Final reflection
Each cat has its own tastes. If it refuses something, do not force it: try something else or another time. Avoid small objects that can be swallowed, cords, toxic plants and any item that poses a risk. Sudden changes in behavior, loss of appetite or apathy deserve a vet visit.
