The challenge of finishing a short book in seven days
One week, one small book and a pace you can keep.
Finishing a book gives a satisfaction many people have not felt in a long time. Short books, up to about 150 pages, are a good way in: you can complete one in a week without needing hours a day, and the boost in confidence helps keep the habit going.
Goal
Finish a short book in seven days and find a reading pace that fits your routine.
Materials and time
- A short book you really want to read, preferably under 150 pages.
- A bookmark and a notebook or notes app.
- Twenty to thirty minutes a day, preferably at the same time.
Daily steps
- Day 1 - Divide. Count the pages and divide by seven. Mark each day's stopping point in the book. Read the first part.
- Day 2 - Choose the place. Decide where and when you read: after coffee, on the commute, before bed. Read the day's part.
- Day 3 - Remove distractions. Keep your phone away and read the day's part. Notice how much you get done without interruptions.
- Day 4 - Note a sentence. Read and copy down a sentence or idea that caught your attention.
- Day 5 - Catch up, if needed. If you fell behind, read a bit more today, without guilt. If you are on track, enjoy it.
- Day 6 - Short reread. Reread the sentences you noted and read the day's part.
- Day 7 - Finish. Finish the book and write three lines: what it said, what you thought and what you will do with it.
Log
Keep a simple table: day, pages read, time spent, where you read and one word about how you felt. This helps you see what makes reading easier or harder.
Final reflection
If you finished, look at what worked: the time, the place, the size of the goal. If you did not, that is information too. Maybe the book was not the right one, the goal was big or the week was unusual. The challenge is for learning about your pace, not for proving anything. Pick the next book and repeat.
