A simple financial calculation; it ignores perks such as classes and assessments, and any cancellation penalties in your contract.
It turns the membership fee into a number you can feel: the price of each time you walk into the gym. It helps you decide whether to keep a plan, compare it with a day pass and have a concrete nudge to go train on the lazy days.
Enter the monthly fee, the joining fee, how many months the contract lasts, monthly extras and how many times you go each week. The joining fee is divided by the contract months and added to the fee and extras to form the monthly cost. Visits per month are weekly visits times 52 divided by 12. Cost per visit is the monthly cost divided by visits.
With a 120 membership, no joining fee or extras, and 3 visits a week, you make 13 visits a month and each costs 9.23. If a day pass costs 40, the membership pays off from 3 visits a month, which makes the plan very good value at that training pace.
It measures money only. Group classes, personal training, a pool, fitness assessments and the motivation of having a routine are not counted. If you stop going the cost per visit climbs, and contracts with commitment terms have their own cancellation rules.
