Document checklist for an international trip
Requirements change by country and nationality, and confirming early avoids surprises.
Short answer: the documents required depend on your country of origin, the destination, the purpose and the length of the trip, and the rules change. So the safe way is to check, in official sources from the destination and from your country, what applies to your case, note deadlines and gather everything in advance. This text does not state the rules of any specific country.
Prerequisites
- Your country of nationality and the details of each traveler.
- The destination, dates and purpose of the trip.
- Access to the official websites of the government, embassy or consulate of the destination.
Steps
- Passport or travel document. Check the validity and whether there is a minimum validity requirement after the return date. Check the physical condition of the document and whether there are blank pages. Renewals can take time.
- Visa or entry authorization. Find out whether the destination requires a visa or another electronic authorization for your nationality and your purpose of travel. Check deadlines, costs and required documents.
- Entry requirements. Consult requirements such as proof of accommodation, onward ticket, financial means, vaccinations and health or immigration forms.
- Transit and connections. Check whether there are requirements for layovers, including at transit airports.
- Travelers who are minors. Confirm specific documents and authorizations, if applicable.
- Insurance and health. Check whether insurance is mandatory and which vaccinations are required or recommended.
- Driver. If you will drive, research which documents are accepted for a driving license at the destination.
- Copies. Make digital and paper copies and keep them separate from the originals.
- Dates. Create reminders with the deadlines for each document and, close to the trip, reconfirm the rules.
Reliable sources
Prioritize official websites of the government, embassy or consulate, and of the airline, which usually checks documents at boarding. Be wary of intermediaries that promise to make things easier for a fee without showing the official source.
Common mistakes
- Leaving it to the last minute.
- Relying on the rules of another nationality.
- Ignoring processing times.
- Not reconfirming before traveling.
