A geometric estimate — actual plant needs vary by species, climate and soil.
This garden planning calculator answers the question every new vegetable-bed owner asks: how many plants fit in my space, and how much water will they need each week? It suits backyard growers, big-balcony gardeners and community plot holders who want to buy the right number of seedlings and size their watering before getting their hands dirty.
You enter the bed area in square meters, the spacing between plants in centimeters, and the liters of water each plant gets per week. Spacing becomes a square grid: each plant takes spacing times spacing, so the plant count is the area divided by that little square, rounded down. Rows come from the side of an equivalent square bed divided by the spacing, rounded up. Weekly watering is plants times liters per plant.
Take a 6 m² bed with seedlings every 25 cm. Each plant occupies 0.0625 m², so 96 plants fit. The equivalent side of about 2.45 m divided by 0.25 m gives 9.8, which rounds up to 10 rows. At 2 liters per plant per week, watering comes to 192 liters weekly.
This is plain geometry: it ignores walking paths, odd bed shapes, and the needs of each species, climate and soil. Treat the result as a starting point and check the recommended spacing on the seed packet or with a local grower.
