Total cost over the period
$900
Cost per session
$19
This is a simplified estimate based on the amounts you entered yourself.
See what a hobby really costs once you add the starting gear and the expenses that repeat every month. The calculator also gives a cost per session, which helps anyone deciding whether to keep going with photography, cycling, climbing or any pastime that drains money a little at a time.
Enter the initial gear cost, the recurring monthly spend, how many months you have been at it, and how many sessions you do per month. Total cost is the gear plus the monthly spend times the months. Cost per session divides that total by the number of sessions in the period, which is sessions per month times months. Both results update as you change any field, so you can simulate extra months of practice.
Gear of $800, monthly spend of $120, 10 months of practice and 6 sessions a month. Total: 800 + 120 × 10 = $2,000. That is 60 sessions, so each one cost about $33.33. The longer you keep using the gear, the lower that figure tends to get.
It relies only on the numbers you enter and treats monthly spending as constant. It ignores gear depreciation, resale value and occasional costs you forgot to count. It is a simple snapshot, not a financial analysis.
