A simple calculation with the values you enter; check the specific rules for your case.
The percentage calculator solves two sums that come up constantly: what X% of a number is, and the percentage change between an old value and a new one. It helps with discounts, tips, price increases, grades and targets without having to remember the formula.
For the first calculation, the tool takes the base value and multiplies it by the percentage divided by 100. For the change, it subtracts the base value from the new value, divides the result by the base value and multiplies by 100. A positive result means an increase and a negative one means a decrease. If the base value is zero or negative, the change shows as zero, since there is no valid base to compare against.
With a base value of 80 and a percentage of 25, the result is 80 × 25 ÷ 100 = 20, the size of a 25% discount on 80. For the change, with a new value of 60, the math is (60 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = −25%, a drop of one quarter. If the new value were 100, it would give +25%.
This is plain arithmetic, with no financial rounding or interest rules. For money decisions, double-check the numbers. The change only works with a positive base value, and the percentage of a value does not depend on the new value field.
