The per-activity figures are illustrative averages, not a reading of your actual water meter — useful for a sense of where usage concentrates.
The household water footprint calculator estimates how many liters of water your routine at home uses per day and per year, based on how often you shower, flush, run the washing machine or dishwasher, or wash dishes by hand. It gives a sense of where water goes, without replacing your water meter reading.
For each activity, you enter how many times it happens per day. The tool multiplies by the illustrative averages in its code: an 8-minute shower 50 liters, a flush 9, a laundry load 70, a dishwasher load 15 and hand washing with the tap running 40. The sum is liters per day, and multiplying by 365 gives the annual total.
In one day you take 2 showers (2 × 50 = 100 L), flush 5 times (5 × 9 = 45 L) and run one dishwasher load (15 L). Total: 160 liters per day. Over a year, 160 × 365 = 58,400 liters. Shortening a shower or using the dishwasher instead of washing by hand quickly shows up in the numbers.
The liters per use are illustrative averages, not a reading from your meter. Fixtures, pressure and habits change consumption a lot, and the tool leaves out gardening, general cooking or personal hygiene beyond these activities. Use it as an order of magnitude.
